Why This Rarity?
The Airbus A318 is inherently rare due to its low production volume, with only 80 units built globally, making it the least common member of the A320 family. The specific aircraft YR-ASA is further distinguished by its historical significance as the first and last A318 operated by TAROM, adding significant collector value to its limited-edition aviation tags.

Aircraft Background Story
Delivered to TAROM in November 2006, the Airbus A318 registered YR-ASA was affectionately named 'Aurel Vlaicu' after the renowned Romanian aviation pioneer. As the first of its type to join the Romanian flag carrier's fleet, it served as a key component of their short-haul operations for approximately 18 years, connecting Bucharest to various European destinations. The aircraft became a symbol of the airline's modernization efforts during the mid-2000s.
Throughout its long service life, YR-ASA maintained a unique distinction within the airline. It was not only the first A318 to enter TAROM's service but also the very last one to remain active, effectively bookending the airline's 'Baby Bus' era. Its final passenger flight took place on November 21, 2024, flying from Iași to Bucharest, marking the conclusion of the A318 chapter for the carrier.
Following its retirement, the aircraft was ferried to Castellón, Spain, for dismantling. Its legacy was preserved when a portion of its fuselage skin was selected to create a special 10th-anniversary edition of Aviationtag, allowing enthusiasts to own a physical piece of this specific aircraft that both opened and closed TAROM's A318 history.
