Thai Airways International was established in 1960 as the national flag carrier of Thailand. The airline quickly distinguished itself in the region, notably becoming the first all-jet airline in Asia by 1966 with its fleet of Caravelle SE-210s. Throughout the following decades, the carrier expanded its reach significantly, pioneering jet services and launching iconic routes that helped transform destinations like Bali into global tourist hubs. In 1997, the airline solidified its international standing by becoming one of the five founding members of the Star Alliance, the world's first global airline alliance. Over the years, the airline has operated a diverse range of aircraft, including the Airbus A300-B4, which introduced wide-bodied service to the fleet in 1978, and the Boeing 747-400, which joined the fleet in 1990. The brand is famously associated with the slogan 'Smooth as Silk,' a philosophy that reflects the airline's commitment to traditional Thai hospitality, grace, and seamless service. In recent years, the airline underwent a major transformation following financial challenges. In 2021, it entered a court-supervised business rehabilitation process to restructure its operations and capital. As part of this consolidation, the airline integrated its subsidiary, Thai Smile, back into its primary operations. By June 2025, the Central Bankruptcy Court officially terminated the business rehabilitation process, marking a successful recovery for the carrier as it continues to operate as Thailand's premier international airline.
