US Army Air Forces

The United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) was formally established on June 20, 1941, evolving out of the United States Army Air Corps to unify command, administrative, and air combat arms as global conflict loomed. Led by General Henry H. 'Hap' Arnold, the organization was created to achieve near-autonomous status within the War Department, granting aviation leaders the operational independence required to direct modern, industrialized air warfare.

During World War II, the USAAF expanded into the largest aerial military armada in history, operating a massive global network across European, Pacific, Mediterranean, and China-Burma-India theaters. The operator deployed legendary aircraft that defined aviation history, including heavy strategic bombers like the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Consolidated B-24 Liberator, and Boeing B-29 Superfortress; tactical transports such as the Douglas C-47 Skytrain; and revered fighter escorts including the North American P-51 Mustang, Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, and Lockheed P-38 Lightning.

USAAF aircraft were distinguished by standard camouflage finishes, most notably Olive Drab over Neutral Gray, before transitioning in late 1943 to unpainted natural bare metal to boost performance and simplify maintenance. Operational markings centered around the iconic national insignia—the white star encircled in blue, modified in 1943 to feature flanking white bars with red (and later blue) borders. Units also became world-famous for vibrant personalized nose art, colorful group tail stripes, and distinctive cowl paint schemes.

The USAAF played a decisive role in landmark operations such as the Combined Bomber Offensive over Europe, the D-Day air umbrella, and the strategic bombing campaign against Japan, which culminated in the atomic missions flown by the Twentieth Air Force in 1945. Following the Allied victory, the passage of the National Security Act of 1947 ended the USAAF's era as an Army branch when it officially transitioned on September 18, 1947, into the independent United States Air Force (USAF).
